Torch-On Felt
A multi-layer bitumen membrane that is heat-bonded to the roof. It is a well-proven system for extensions, garages and commercial roofs, and can last many years when installed properly. It needs experienced installers because of the heat work involved.
See our page on torch-on felt roofing.
Cold-Applied Systems
Cold-applied systems are installed without a naked flame, which makes them a good option where heat work is not suitable, for example near thatch, timber or other sensitive areas. They are also useful for awkward details and repairs.
See our page on cold-applied and EPDM flat roofing.
EPDM Rubber
EPDM is a single-piece rubber membrane, popular on garages and extensions. It is flexible and long-lasting, and suits roofs with few awkward details.
How To Choose
- The roof itself. Its size, shape, falls and what it joins onto.
- Access and safety. Heat work is not suitable everywhere.
- How it is used. A roof that is walked on needs a different approach to one that is not.
- Budget and expected life. We will explain the options in plain terms.
Common Flat Roof Problems
- Ponding water that does not drain within a day or two
- Splits, cracks and blisters in the covering
- Failed upstands and flashings where the roof meets a wall
- Blocked outlets and gutters
Repair Or Replace?
Where the damage is limited and the rest of the roof is sound, a repair is often enough. If the covering is worn out or has been patched many times, replacing it properly is usually better value.
