Moss On Roofs: Should You Remove It?
Moss is one of the most common things people notice on a roof. Whether it matters depends on how much there is and what it is doing.

Is Moss Bad For A Roof?
A little moss is not an emergency, but moss holds moisture against the roof covering, and heavy growth can cause problems. It can lift tiles at the edges, block the gaps between them, and wash into gutters where it causes blockages and overflows.
On older or porous tiles, constantly damp moss can speed up wear.
What Not To Do
- Do not pressure wash the roof. It can strip the surface of tiles, force water under them and damage the roof.
- Do not scrape it off aggressively. It can damage the tile surface.
- Do not climb up yourself. Wet moss is very slippery.
What Works
- Having moss removed gently by hand or soft brush by a professional
- Treating the roof with a suitable biocide afterwards, following the manufacturer’s instructions
- Clearing the gutters so the moss that comes off does not block them
- Cutting back overhanging trees, which keep the roof shaded and damp
When Moss Is A Sign Of Something Else
Heavy moss growth can hide slipped or broken tiles, and a roof that stays damp may have drainage or ventilation problems. If the moss is thick, it is worth having the roof checked as well as cleaned.
